Short threads near the hub are high, long ones at the rim are low, so the web is a scale laid out in space — drop flies round the edge for bass, near the middle for treble. The spider takes the shortest route, so where you put the next fly decides the phrase. Longer threads take longer to cross, which means low notes hold and high ones hurry. Leave it running and it feeds itself.
