Operation

Three stages. No interaction required.

Canopy is dispatched from the nearest depot, holds station above you for the duration of your session, and returns on its own.

01 — DEPLOY

Arrival

Units arrive at your location and establish formation at 2.4 metres. Median dispatch time in serviced areas is 8 minutes 40 seconds.

02 — HOLD

Station-keeping

The formation tracks your position and maintains a 1.8-metre field around your head. Anti-noise is beamformed downward and inward. Bystanders are unaffected.

03 — RELEASE

Session end

At the close of your window the units ascend and return to depot. The field collapses over approximately four seconds.

Conditions
  1. Unit self-noise is included in all quoted field measurements and is not deducted. Sound levels sum by power, not arithmetically: on a 71 dB(A) source, 33 dB of attenuation leaves 38 dB(A) of traffic, which combines with 34 dB(A) of self-noise to place the occupant at 39.5 dB(A). Self-noise is narrowband and attracts a +5 dB tonal adjustment under ISO 1996-2. Adjusted, the canopy is the loudest single source within the field.
  2. The field is sized to one adult at head height. Persons walking beside the occupant remain in ambient conditions. Umbearlla does not offer a shared field on the Day plan.
  3. Serviceability correlates inversely with mean daytime ambient. Zones exceeding 62 dB(A) are not currently serviceable, as station-keeping accuracy degrades in turbulent and reverberant environments.
  4. Acoustic telemetry captured during a session, including speech occurring inside the field, is retained to improve station-keeping and cancellation models. Telemetry is not associated with your account except where required for billing, safety, dispute resolution, product development, or lawful request.
  5. At session end the formation ascends. Umbearlla makes no representation as to the acoustic environment following session end and accepts no liability arising from it.
  6. Canopy is not available indoors, on public transport, in covered walkways, within 5 km of a controlled aerodrome, during precipitation, or in sustained wind above 24 km/h. Across first-release trials the median serviced day permitted 4 h 10 m of operation.

Umbearlla operates managed acoustic infrastructure in three metropolitan regions. Generation 1 entered first release this year.

This page is a speculative design artefact from the Sonic UX Research Lab, made to think about the acoustic commons — about what happens when quiet becomes a product that is delivered to individuals rather than a condition that is shared by everyone in a street. Nothing here can be bought, nothing is dispatched, and no data leaves this page. Any resemblance to services you already pay for is the point.
