What should you be asking?

You have a product idea and no sound yet. That is the cheapest moment to get this right, and the one almost everybody skips. Start by seeing what sound can actually do, then work through the panels — keep the questions that matter, bin the ones that don't. What comes out is a brief you can hand to a sound team.

Before you decide anything

Ten things sound does

none chosen yet

You cannot sensibly answer does this need sound until you know what sound is capable of doing. Here are ten jobs it does. Tap any of them, and mark the ones you want — those become the function analysis in your brief.

The awkward draws are the useful ones

Deal a situation

A question bank can only return what you already thought to look for. This deals you a situation instead, and lets you work out what you would need to know about it.

Your brief

Assembled from what you chose and answered. The structure follows §4.4 of Sonic UX — function analysis, brand attributes, use-cases, constraints.

Structure after §4.4 “Building a Brief for the Sound Team”; functions after §0.2; questions from chapter 5 of Sonic UX: The Science of Sound in User Experience Research, KC Collins, MIT Press.
